Item Description
The very pretty giltwood and gesso low or coffee table, having a superb quality rectangular recessed variegated green marble top above a well carved foliate frieze and shell centered apron standing on four cabriole legs to claw and ball feet, the whole being a later adaption and surviving from the second quarter of eighteenth century England.
The table would originally have been a stand for a cabinet, with the shell decoration only being present to one side. The giltwood is in un-meddled with condition with the pink bole showing through in some areas whilst she stands very well and is ready to use. The marble is in superb order.
The George II era (1727–1760) was a formative period in interior design, shaping trends that resonate in our homes even today. Carved shells, masks, vitruvian scrolls or putti decorated the furniture of this period with carved gilded gesso covering pine used for looking glasses and table legs.
Elegant coffee tables are very thin on the ground; catch this beauty while you can.
