Item Description

The late twentieth century two-tier table or stand by Paul Belvoir (b.1963) of restrained architectural form, at four feet long and constructed with two thick, softly rounded frosted glass shelves supported by patinated cast iron uprights and stylised corner mounts, the elongated oval glass platforms having a subtle green tint to the edge, dark sculptural ironwork terminating in foliate forms at the corners, adding a faintly art deco inflection to an otherwise modernist silhouette and formerly of the Gordon Watson stable.

Structurally solid and ready for use, the condition is very good for the period. The glass is free from cracks or major chips, with only minor surface marks commensurate with use. The iron retains its original dark finish with gentle surface wear and light oxidation in places, contributing to its honest industrial character.

Paul Belvoir, educated at the Medway School of Art, creates an array of objects from silver, lapis lazuli, rock crystal, Italian slate and other luxury materials. His elegant, sleek designs recall the strongly defined lines of Art Deco and 20th-century modern living as a whole. His silver has had solo exhibitions in New York, Paris and London. Further examples are also held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Working equally well as a low console, television stand, display shelf, or a contemporary counterpoint within a more traditional interior; particularly effective against plaster, stone or time-worn timber where the glass can visually float.
