Item Description
The attractive pair of mid-20th century novelty bookends modelled in the form of halved pineapples, cast in heavy metal and finished with vibrant hand-applied cold paint decoration, each pineapple formed as a sectional half, the interiors left plain and weighted to provide practical support, whilst the exteriors retain their stylised yellow, green and aubergine colouring and survive from the third quarter of the twentieth century.
Both examples remain in good decorative order, displaying expected surface wear, rubbing and minor paint losses commensurate with age and use. The castings are sound and stable, with no significant structural issues noted.
The pineapple has long been regarded as a symbol of hospitality and welcome, enjoying particular popularity in decorative arts throughout the mid-20th century. These playful novelty bookends reflect the cheerful, slightly eccentric decorative taste of the post-war period and possess a strong visual presence despite their relatively modest scale.
A colourful and characterful pair that work particularly well in libraries, kitchens, garden rooms or eclectic interiors, offering both practical function and decorative kitsch charm.
