Item Description

The scarce late Victorian miniature silver loupe magnifying glass of cylindrical form, having all-over chase engraved foliate decoration to a hinge to the handle with two grips to the casing for opening and closing the loupe, the whole with hanging loop and apparently unmarked and surviving from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

The loupe could not be in better condition being in working order and the hinge in good functioning condition. We cannot find any similar loupes having been sold.

While magnifying lenses have existed for millennia, with early examples from Ancient Egypt dating back to 2500 B.C.E., the first loupe was invented in the 18th century. Since then, the first “loupe” that inspired modern ones was a surgical loupe with two lenses created by a German doctor in 1876

A simply beautiful object which combines the beauty of a piece of charm jewellery and functionality of use.
