Item Description

A stylish Robert St John Roper costume sketch, framed and glazed, for costumes created for London's "Top of the Town" theatre restaurant, which resided in the Hippodrome theatre, re-opened to great fanfare in 1958 as a dining venue with performances. The sketch features notations to the drawing as well as a trim sample and metallic embellishments, and is dated 1974. This is one from a series of six original sketches by RSJR currently in stock.

Robert St. John Roper was a prolific theatre costume designer from the 1940’s until his death in 1977, and worked on numerous productions at the Windmill Theatre, the Prince of Wales Theatre, and the London Palladium, and Talk of the Town. As well as designing many costumes for Talk of the Town, he was also involved in the interior design of the venue.

This is a an original sketch on paper, framed, matted and glazed. Frame is in as found fair condition, with glazing intact.
