Item Description

This is a beautiful very early antique dragon and pearl jug made by Mason's Ironstone pottery between 1830 and 1848.

The octagonal jug is hand-decorated with a rich deep cobalt flow blue pattern, the Chinese symbol of Chi, the dragon, on the front and inside the neck, chasing the flaming pearl on the back. The handle is the classic snake, with its jaw biting the jug and its two-pronged tail below. There are clouds to the back as well, and the rim still retains some of the gilding.

The base has the Mason's backstamp with the angular crown in use from 1830 to 1848. The jug is in exceptional condition with no damage, though there is wear to the gilded rim and some age-related surface crazing on the base.

It measures 10.8h, 9w 9.9d.
