Item Description
Early Karabagh Carpet
3.13 x 1.87 m
Antique Karabagh rugs are much sought after by collectors and designers as they boast some of the oldest and most varied designs of all Caucasian weavings, and represent perhaps the finest in quality and artistry amongst pieces from this region.
This attractive Karabagh rug features a pomegranate blossom lattice design, symbolising prosperity, and fertility, usually found in the earlier pieces of the 18th Century. The muted chocolate brown field has a delicate abrash - or, colour variation - which adds a great sense of depth and character to the otherwise stripped-back, monochrome drawing, framed by a wide border.
This early Karabagh rug is in good practical condition for everyday use. The vegetable-dyed colours in its palette have taken on a fine, age related patina.
A sophisticated tribal piece, which would make a welcome addition to a variety of spaces.
