Item Description
Anatolian carpets have a rich heritage of rug weaving which began in the 13th century and were amongst the first wave of Oriental carpets that were exported to Europe. Many were seen in iconic paintings of many of the European masters including Memling, Lotto and Hans Holbein. Today these decorative carpets are highly appreciated for their simple designs, soft colours and lustrous wool.
An interesting Anatolian carpet with a monochrome overall pattern that is cleverly repeated in different shape and array of colour composition. The paisely design dates back from the 6th Century Zoroastrian symbol denoting a floral Cypress tree which is believed to represent life and eternity. The muted aubergine-grey field compliments the variety of subtle colour composition, framed by a wide ivory border.
This Anatolian example is in very good preserved condition for every day use, still retaining its original fringes and borders on both sides.
A charming example that will be a great addition to a variety of settings.
