Item Description
Large Bessarabian Kilim
5.10 x 4.08 m
The tradition of Bessarabian kilim weaving dates to the later period of Ottoman rule over the Eastern Balkans – broadly, the territory now covered by Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova – and is known for an interesting combination of design elements from Anatolian carpets, as well as from high end European weavings.
Rare in this large format, this fine vintage example employs a wide palette in the floral designs, worked in tones of sage green, ivory, salmon and bronze, stamped across the field – a well-balanced, open composition, framed by a tasteful border. The artist has lent a delicate abrash – or, colour variation – to the brown-black ground, which gives this wonderful flatweave a real sense of depth and character.
Preserved in very good condition for everyday use.
A beautiful piece, in an impressive size, to suit a wide variety of spaces.
