Item Description
An Exceptional Late 18th Century Walnut Marquetry and Parquetry Commode, Probably German.
The commode is unusual in form with bow front and overhanging top with everted and canted corners to front and back. The centre of the top, each side and each drawer front having a highly sophisticated repeating cube design. The top has an oval and trellis work design inside a repeating border. On the drawer fronts and the top there is a further repetitive geometric border and wide quarter veneered crossbanding to the edges. The pilasters surrounding the drawer fronts have another moulding comprised of overlapping oval designs and the base of the piece has inlaid mock fluting. Standing on short tapering legs with inlaid stringing.
It is a masterpiece of inlay from a top quality workshop of the period and must have taken an enormous amount of time and skill to produce. The various woods have mellowed beautifully with age and retains its original floral paterae handle and escutcheon plates.
This is a very unusual model of commode.
