Item Description
An interesting and large French 19th century oak side table with finely carved detailing and original finely shaped marble top.
The table of interesting wide but shallow proportions with a serpentine frieze and standing on four cabriole legs with hoof feet. The piece is conceived in the Louis XIV style and the carved detailing is restrained and elegant, centering on a sunflower motif - probably intended as a reference to the sun king himself. The carved shells to the knees are very well carved and flanked by panels of strapwork detailing.
The marble top is particularly beautifully figured and unusually thick and the maker has chosen to follow the lines of the table frame precisely - no mean feat at all when a piece is as complex in outline as this one. There is also a fine moulding carved into the edge of the marble which is another sign of great quality.
The relatively shallow depth of this table increases its versatility. It could be used as a hall table, as a buffet table in a dining room or as a conventional side table and the marble top ensures that it will always provide a decorative accent wherever it is used.
