Item Description

A fantastic example of an early piece of enamel advertising. This double-sided flange sign was produced by the Chromographic Enamel Co of Wovlerhampton for the Premier Bicycle Company.

The Premier Bicycle Company was first formed in 1891, by 1914 it had changed it's name to Coventry Premier Ltd and by 1920 the company was acquired by Singer ...
This sign was produced by Chromo of Wolverhampton, probably the first dedicated enamel sign manufacturer in the world (in possible contention with the Patent Enamel Co. of Birmingham), who opened their factory in 1886.
This sign was almost certainly produced around the turn of the century - certainly no later than 1915. The earlier manufacturing technique evidenced by the blue enamel underlayer visible where there is enamel loss around the outer edges.

It's condition belies the pieces age; the colours remain vibrant, the surface gloss is fantastic. There are a few small patches of enamel loss, but they are small and don't impact on the sign's legibility and the flange remains in excellent order. I don't know much of the history of this piece, but I found it doubtful it's spent much time outside, in fact I wonder whether it was ever displayed.

The sign measures 41cm wide x 35.5cm high and the flange is 4cm deep.
