Item Description
A wonderful 18th-century oak high back hooded settle, exhibiting craftsmanship and rich character throughout. This imposing piece features a part fluted hood above a deeply panelled back and sides, designed to offer shelter from draughts and create a sense of enclosed comfort — a hallmark of period settle design.
The scrolled arms rest on moulded, fluted supports, adding elegant architectural detail to the robust oak frame. Below the seat, the panelled base conceals cupboard doors, offering practical storage, ideal for a hallway, kitchen, or boot room.
The oak displays a wonderful, timeworn patina with warm depth of colour. A removable seat cushion adds comfort, without compromising its antique integrity. The seat cushion is in used but usable condition, and could be easily recovered with a fabric of your choosing.
This early Georgian settle also includes some earlier 17th-century oak panel sections, probably repurposed from an Elizabethan or Jacobean panelled room. These include sections of a fluted pilaster on the hood and scrolled capitals for the arms, adding a unique depth of history and a rare decorative quality to the piece.
As expected with a piece of this age, there are the associated knocks and bumps acquired over time, as well as a small number of old, inactive woodworm holes.
