Item Description
A charming and decorative antique sampler with a wealth of animals, buildings, plants and flowers depicted in a folky, naive style within a floral border.
The sampler is signed ‘Maria Hazell, Kingston School’. It is also dated ‘1838’, which dates it to the first full year of Queen Victoria’s reign, just after the William IV period.
It is also inscribed with verses two, three and four from Thomas Gibbons’ Hymn ‘In the Soft Season of thy Youth’:
“Remember thy creator god
For him thy hours employ
Make him thy fear thy love thy hope
Thy confidence thy joy
He shall defend and guide thy course
Through life’s uncertain sea
Till thou art landed on thy shore
Of blest eternity
Then seek the lord betimes and choose
The path of heavenly truth
The earth affords no lovelier sight
Than a religious youth”
Framed and glazed in a gilt cushion moulded frame.
The sampler has some wear and discolouration throughout. As a decorative object on the wall, we love the way it looks, and this is part of the reason we chose it.
Approximate overall measurements: 53cm high x 43cm wide x 3cm deep.
