Expressionist Bloomsbury Style Floral Still Life, Antique Original Oil Painting

ANTIQUE ORIGINAL OIL ON PANEL PAINTING, Early 20th Century

A vibrant and expressive artwork depicting flowers in a basket on a table, somewhat reminiscent of the Bloomsbury Group and bears some resemblance to some other still life work by artists such as Vanessa Bell, Laura Knight or perhaps Dora Carrington.

The artist has utilised confident, thick textured impasto techniques matched with an expressive colour palette to great effect.

The artwork appears to be unsigned; there is an indistinct inscription to the lower left, but this is faint, small and hard to make out. It could possibly be a signature. There is also a possibility of a signature if removed from the frame, but the artwork hasn’t been removed from the frame as its original and of the period.

Framed and glazed in its original and highly decorative gilt frame.

Label verso for ‘J. P. Ballard, Reading Fine Art Gallery, 21 Cross Street, Reading.’ This label dates from the first part of the 20th century, prior to when the telephone number was later added. Circa 1910s-1920s.

As it’s been behind glass, the painting has survived extremely well with very minimal wear commensurate with age. The frame is also in good vintage order with only minor handling wear.

Overall approximate measurements: 30cm x 27cm x 3cm. The panel itself measures approximately 24cm x 21cm.
