Item Description

Pair Art Deco table lamps, acanthus leaf, Maison Charles style, faceted crystal & gilt bronze,1930`s ca, French.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: brass lamp holder & cover, gold silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) and cream fabric lampshade. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

This Art Deco Modernist interpretation of the traditional lamp is attributed to Maison Charles of Paris. It has several design features typical of Maison Charles: the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles simplified in a Modernist design, elegant proportions, luxury materials, crisp casting and heavy weight. This design is classic, timeless & decorative.

They have several design features typical of 1930`s Art Deco: the Modernist design concept, repetitive geometric forms, elegant proportions and use of quality materials: crystal, gilt bronze & brass.

With the luxurious materials & sculptural presence, these lamps would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

This design from the bottom consists of a round brass base decorated on the collar with a quality cast gilt bronze acanthus leaf decoration.  The acanthus leaf, as in this design, has been used throughout history as an architectural feature. Being perennial acanthus is symbolic of longevity.

The base is weighted & stable. It has green felt underneath to protect the furniture below.

Rising from the round base, the main column simulating giant crystal beads. It has a sequence of alternated round faceted crystal balls with brass decorative tapered rings leading to the new brass lampholder. This is inside a polished brass metal cover. The lamp holder has 2 brass screw rings to hold the lampshade in place.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price.

Each lamp is finished with a new cream fabric lampshade.

These antique lamps are in very good condition. The original antique patina has been preserved, adding character & depth. The frames are sound. The crystal portions in very good condition with no chips or cracks. The metal surfaces overall are in very good condition for their age. FRENCH ART DECO HISTORY

“Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed from Africa and Asia, but also from the Greek Revival style of the 19th Century. Art Deco embraced the new, epitomising optimism & celebration. The new streamline version of Neoclassical forms executed in luxury materials: silver, gold, bronze, marble, rosewood, coromandel, chrome & crystal.
