Item Description
An early 20th-century oil painting on paper by French artist Marthe Orant (1874–1957), depicting a charming park scene with a woman seated on a wrought-iron bench beneath tall trees. The abundant foliage is rendered in broad, loose brushstrokes, conveying the lively movement of nature, while characterful details—from ducks in the lower right to the traditional bench—add depth and interest.
The composition captures exuberant nature overtaking a Parisian park, enhanced by a captivating palette of greens, teals and browns, contrasted by the woman’s red dress and the warm tone of the paper, evoking a summery atmosphere. The work is mounted in a striking carved gilt gesso frame with black margins and red highlights.
Marthe Orant (1874–1957) received her early artistic education in childhood and refined her skills under Henri Royer. Working in a post-Impressionist style, she was influenced by the Nabis and advised by Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard. Renowned for her lively depictions of Parisian streets and parks, as well as still lifes and interiors, Orant’s works are distinguished by flowing brushstrokes and vivid colour.
