Item Description
A 1923 oil painting on canvas by French artist Pierre Deval (1897–1993), depicting a serene landscape of rolling hills dotted with woods and trees. A winding path runs through fields bordered by walls and fences, rendered in a subtle spring palette of greens, blues, and browns.
Deval uses soft brushstrokes to render the shapes of trees, bushes, and fences with gentle detailing, harmoniously arranged to create a quintessential country landscape. The vertical format creates a striking perspective, with the path dominating the foreground before opening to a wider vista beyond.
The work is signed and dated by the artist and is mounted in a giltwood frame, with the sides painted red. An attractive and evocative portrayal of the French countryside, marked by a refined composition and atmospheric palette.
Born in Lyon, Deval studied art in Paris and began exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne in 1921, later participating in the Venice Biennale in 1924. After a brief period in Algiers, he settled in Provence, where he developed his reputation as a strong colourist. Known for sensitive portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes, Deval drew lasting inspiration from the Domaine d’Orvès, a celebrated garden he purchased in 1925 and maintained throughout his life.
