Item Description
A mid-20th-century carved wooden head by Cuban sculptor Florencio Gelabert (1904 - 1995), a key figure in the development of modern sculpture in Cuba. Trained at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana, Gelabert worked primarily in wood, producing stylised human forms that reflect the influence of mid-century modernism and Afro-Cuban artistic traditions.
This work, dating from the 1940s to 1960s, demonstrates his characteristic reduction of form and emphasis on sculptural volume. In carved hardwood, likely mahogany, this piece is in very good condition.
