Item Description
A hand-thrown and glazed Italian apothecary jar dating from the mid-19th century. Originally used to store herbal remedies, the jar bears the hand-painted inscription "Stafisagria", referring to delphinium staphisagria, a medicinal herb historically used by apothecaries despite its toxic properties.
The front is further decorated with a painted apothecary symbol, identifying the jar's contents for use within a dispensary or pharmacy. Rich in character, the piece displays the irregularities and patina associated with handmade pottery of the period, and is in very good antique condition without chips or cracks.
