Item Description
Wooden painted martial arts Jian or sword, found in its original dark blue painted finish. Carved handle with carved, ribbed "blade". Good patination. Naturally burnished handle from use. Blemishes and losses commensurate with age and use. In Martial art schools, wooden swords were and still are used for training, without access to schools sword knowledge was passed through generations quite often with a simple stick. Certain Taoist believe the wooden training sword to have ritual purpose metaphorically representing the discipline and accomplishment of a student. As such, elevating some beyond a simple stick, they become powerful works in their own right. Savoured and preserved by their owners. China, Circa 1850.
