Item Description

Late 19th Century Neapolitan School Bronze Figure of Narcissus, After the Antique. A large Grand Tour Bronze of the Roman God of Wine, the original discovered in Pompeii in 1862, now residing in the Museo Nazionale Archaeologico in Naples, Italy. Long thought to be a figure of a youthful Narcissus, who was said to have fallen in love with his own reflection, is now recognised to be an image of Bacchus the Roman God of Wine. This example maintains his removeable fig leaf to hide is modesty and the blushes of the viewer. Excellent Patina with verdigris beginning to show. Unsigned, however the Fig Leaf indicates possibly by the Sommer Foundry. Italy, Circa 1890.
