Item Description

A naive ship drawing, sketched in graphite, penned in the corner reads as follows by H. Smith of Lawrence, MA, "in the evening" of November 30, 1854. Housed in a glazed maple frame.

The drawing on a pale blue woven paper. With Ben Franklin lettered across the side of the hull, probably depicting the USS Franklin, that was built in 1815

The ship is covered with jolly sailors an oversized anchor and garland of seaweed.

graphite on faintly lined pale blue paper, with an embossed stamp at lower left. Age related discolouration and abrasions.
