Item Description
An original Italian oil painting: Portrait of an Elegant Seated Woman by Attilio Toro (1892–1982), housed in a suitable giltwood frame.
Attilio Toro (1892–1982) was an Italian painter whose career bridged traditional academic art and emerging modern influences of the 20th century. He is considered one of the leading exponents of twentieth-century Neapolitan painting. Toro initially trained in his father’s atelier, where he developed a strong foundation in classical drawing and composition that remained central to his work throughout his life.
His work was inspired by nineteenth-century painting, while developing a distinct stylistic language characterized by dense brushwork and luminous tones. His preferred subjects included portraits in the style of Antonio Mancini, marked by a strong sense of sensitivity and expression.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he was a favoured student of the painting professor Vincenzo Volpe. After graduating, his talent recognised and highly regarded by Carlo Siviero, director of the Neapolitan Academy—earned him an appointment as an assistant in the painting department. In 1940, he received an award from the Columbus Association for his work.
In 1961, his painting San Gregorio d'Alife, exhibited at the National Exhibition in Caserta, was awarded a gold medal.
