Item Description
An antique neoclassical style patinated bronze trident sculpture, mounted on a limestone base.
Originally a sculptural fountain, this mid 19th century English piece now stands as a decorative piece in exterior and interior settings.
Triton
Thought to be a the mystical trident of the Greek god Triton, depicted as a fish-tailed sea-god or merman. He was the son of the sea god, Poseidon, and his wife, Amphitrite, who lived with his parents in a golden palace in the depths of the sea, according to the Greek poet Hesiod.
Triton had a human body down to his waist, and the tail of a fish. Triton’s special attribute was this trident not only to protect his realm but as a symbol of his high royal status.
