Item Description
Sourced from a cathedral in the south west of England, this arched gothic front door dates from the mid 1800s. On the front, it features vertical oak plank batten construction detailed with original strap hinges. These are highly decorative, showcasing scrolls stylised with foliage in a style often associated with the gothic era. At the time of the door’s construction, a blacksmith would have made these hinges by hand, heating the wrought iron to extreme temperatures and hammering the design into the shape and sturdy structure required to support the heavyweight oak. At the back, this gothic oak door is just as unusual, made from a reinforced construction of vertical and horizontal panels. It features the a large lock and the original latch.
