Item Description
An antique Minton glazed encaustic tile attrubiting to A.W.N Pugin, depicting the coat of arms of the Comyn family, made for St Giles Church Cheadl.
This 6 inch square tile is decorated with three wheat sheafs with a fleur-de-lis border in a buff terracotta over a rich rouge ground.
The gothic revival designer A.W.N Pugin reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire, while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury.
Dating to circa 1844, this tile originates from Pugin’s studio Alton Towers, Shrewsbury’s Seat, now making for a perfect decorative piece for display in a period cottage or townhouse looking to add style and charm.
