Item Description

A large antique carved York stone sculpture of a Greek god.

This Victorian carved stone bust of a bearded man is thought to be Poseidon, the Greek God of the sea, earthquakes, and horses.

Boldly carved with an alluring presence, this powerful character sits on a shaped square plinth. The perfect sculpture for exterior and interior use.

You can just image water spouting from his mouth as the bust is showcased as an attractive and intriguing water feature.

Poseidon

Poseidon, meaning ‘husband of the earth’, was the brother of chief god Zeus and of Hades, god of the underworld.

The kingdom of the sea fell to Poseidon when the three brothers overthrew their father.

His iconic symbol is that of a trident, usually held raised above him, thought to have been created by the three cyclopes.

Poseidon also had his role as god of earthquakes and was known as ‘earth-shaker’ and ‘stabiliser’ in Greek mythology.

Due to this connection to land, many of his oldest places of worship in Greece were inland, which were sometimes centred on pools and streams.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structured. Weathered. Tooling marks, various chips and scuffs. Small losses. Cement residue to the base. Though the mouth has not been drilled, it could now be so the bust can be used as a water feature.
