Item Description
Introducing ‘The Gossips’; a set of 3 life-size figurative statues by dating from the 20th century by an unknown artist. The set depicts a trio of highly stylised, abstract female forms stood as if casually chatting. One stands with arms crossed while another raises the back of her hand to her face as if whispering. About what, we do not know. We can only assume they gossip about the words with which each is inscribed:
“In the room the women come and go talking of Michelangelo.”
“I have heard the mermaids singing each to each. I do not think that they will sing to me.”
“Between the idea and the reality lies the shadow.”
(Excerpts taken from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Hollow Men by T. S. Eliot)
Together, the trio are a striking set for a garden or interior. Made from ceramic stoneware, each have a natural stone look with beautiful weathering, detailed simply with hints of blue and pale red that draw attention to the heads and the worded panels.
