Item Description

A 6 inch antique tile inspired by Persian style, designed by William De Morgan, stamped Merth Abbey.

Dating from the late 19th century, this tile is embossed with a stylised persian flowers and foliage bold, intricate design in glossy blue and green glazes.

An excellent decorative wall piece for collectors of English ceramic history.

William De Morgan

English potter and tile designer, William De Morgan (1839-1917) was one of the most innovative designers of his time, highly regarded for his ornamental painted tiles and intricate designs that were adapted into domestic and public spaces throughout the last century.

De Morgan formally trained as a fine artist and went on to earn a place at London’s Royal Academy of Art in 1859.

In the 1860s, he began designing stained glass and furniture before moving to ceramics, opening his firm in Chelsea in 1872, where he experimented with firing techniques to create lustre glazes, designing tiles and ceramics for Morris & Co from 1863-1872.

Now this some of his works are on display in the V&A Museum, London, and continue to remain proud pieces of English ceramic history.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Manufacturers stamp can be found to the reverse. No repairs. Minor firing flaws. Plate hanger attached.
