Item Description

An Italian polychrome painted kneehole desk. Late 18th Century.

A rare Venetian painted desk, decorated on all sides in its original Neo-classical decoration, could be used as a free standing desk or dressing table.

Provenance: Bearing label to the inside central drawer 'No t.54 in the Catalogue of C.H. St J. Hornby.' Charles Harold Hornby (1867-1946) was a founding partner of W.H. Smith and deputy vice chairman of the NSPCC. In 1945, his collection was sold by Henry Duke & Son, Dorchester. Some of his collection of antiques is now in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
