Item Description

A wonderful example of an 18th-century Biot jar. "Biot" is a style of pottery that dates back to the 16th century, named for the town where they originated, near Cannes in the south of France.

"Jarres de Biot" (biot jars) are handmade from a mixture of red and grey clay and were used to preserve olives or store flour.  This one is particularly attractive with the stamps of the original maker still seen in the glaze around the rim.

Minor scratches, nicks and scuffs consistent with age and use

No major losses, cracks or structural damage

Slight surface wear and variations in colour due to weathering
