The Decorative Collective is one of the best marketplaces in the UK to find antique and 20th Century cupboards and wardrobes. Some are plain, whilst others beautifully hand-decorated. There are many types of cupboards including housekeepers cupboard and linen cupboard which are often large and were found in many Country Houses. Some of the big houses made their own furniture and these are often referred to as Estate cupboards.
We doubt there is a house anywhere that does not have at least one cupboard in it, such is their obvious practical use. If you live in a modern home or a house with a contemporary scheme, don't be afraid to add to the mix a beautiful, original painted French Armoire or a more traditional piece made from high-quality wood. Adding just one antique piece of furniture can add instant character and texture to a room.
The word Wardrobe first originated in the 14th Century and is derived from the French terms warderobe, wardereube and garderobe, in which "warder" meant "to keep, to guard" and "robe" meant "garment". These can often be found in 'kit' form, even 19th Century ones, so that they could be easily transported and erected where needed, which is pretty useful for modern-day use and our narrow stairways.
