Item Description
An Exceptional Late 18th-century Georgian Elm Country Carver Armchair, circa 1790
This handsome country chair is crafted from solid elm and features a shaped top rail, three splat and ball back, and swept open arms with scrolling terminals and turned supports. The solid plank seat, with a height of 43cm, is raised on square legs joined by stretchers to all four sides, ensuring strength and stability.
Of particular note is the traditional pegged construction: the frame is made using mortise and tenon joints secured with pegs, exactly as expected of fine Georgian craftsmanship. The elm has developed a rich, warm and mellow patina over more than three centuries of careful use and polishing, giving the piece real depth of character. Professionally cleaned and waxed in our workshops, this armchair is in excellent colour and condition. Solid, stable and ready for immediate use.
Made in England circa 1790, this is a highly decorative yet practical example of early elm country house furniture. Equally at home in a period interior or as a striking contrast in a contemporary setting, it is a true collector’s piece with charm, presence and quality.
