Item Description
Quality Early 19th Century William IV Mahogany Lyre Shape Velvet Sofa
A superb country house two seat scroll end sofa of lyre form, dating from the late Regency, early William IV period and very much in the manner of Gillows.
The beautifully carved solid mahogany show frame has a rich, well polished tone, with reeded mouldings, elegant scrolled ends and a shaped high scrolled back. The lyre inspired profile gives the piece great presence and a refined, flowing silhouette.
It stands on reeded, tapering mahogany legs, each terminating in original brass caps and castors. The frame is in excellent condition throughout, structurally sound with no loose joints.
Upholstered in a luxurious Designer’s Guild velvet, an “easy clean” fabric with a dense, soft pile and subtle sheen, the sofa combines period elegance with modern practicality. A long, loose, shaped squab cushion provides comfortable seating while complementing the sophistication of the frame. The sofa seat height is 53cm.
A fine example of early 19th century English craftsmanship, this lyre shape mahogany sofa offers both exceptional decorative appeal and everyday usability, making it an ideal statement piece for a drawing room, sitting room or any refined interior.
