Item Description

A rare and important Cheese Press created c.1650 for a high-status merchant or family who specialised in the production of hard and semi-hard cheeses!

This wonderful Cheese Press originates from Frisia, the Northern Netherlands.

The base is a single plank mounted on sledge feet. Each end of the press is flanked by turned wood uprights, highly decorated and polychromed with folk art references from the area. At the back of the press we can find a wonderfully carved Lion sejant clasping a coat of arms, much of his polychrome still remains.

To the front of the press is an abundantly carved ornate naturalistic pediment, featuring birds, flowers and cherubs in gilt and polychromed gesso.

The main workings of the press include a long-lever handle with wrought iron chains for attaching weights to press the sought after cheese.
