Item Description

A vibrantly coloured typical late Baroque style Italian work following the great Classical tradition of Raphael. c.1780

Very similar in composition to the Annunciation by Carlo Maratta or Maratti, 1625-1713. Artist unknown. Oil on canvas

The Virgin seated on the left bows her head eyes downcast in prayer facing the Angel Gabriel to the right.
Above the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a Dove with the image of God the Father positioned at the top of the composition. Either side clouds billowing with wind are filled with cherubic winged Angels and putti.

The Annunciation was the moment that the Angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary to announce she would conceive and become mother of Jesus, Son of God. Gabriel is shown here handing a white lily to the Virgin, interrupting her prayer.

The painting is in country house condition with several historical repairs. Please note the frame is bowed, however the piece props from floor level and looks superb! The painting could be reframed at request.
