Item Description

An extremely rare example of an English mid 17thC hand carved limestone fire surround dated '1651', from the rule of the Commonwealth, under Oliver Cromwell. We purchased this fire surround in North Wales, it had been covered in several layers of paint which we had professionally removed. The frieze depicts two cherubs on horseback, various animals and birds. Each of the legs has three parts, the mantlepiece has the main part and two separate corner pieces. It is likely that there originally would have been two returns, joining the frieze with the wall, these are absent.

Size as follows
Mantel length: max 210cm, min 186cm. Mantel height: 41cm.
Overall height: 178cm. Overall max depth: 64.5cm.
Opening: 159cm wide x 137cm high.
Each leg: 15cm wide x 12.5cm deep (minimum) / 52cm deep (maximum)
