Item Description

Circa 1870, monumental mid Victorian burr walnut wardrobe ex Ayton Castle in Berwickshire, by T.H.Filmer & Sons London. The wardrobe is framed all over with ebonised beading and carved sections of solid satinwood in the form of a foliate weave, almost like gadrooning. There are four fully relief carved, fluted and tapering burr walnut columns with solid satinwood carved acanthus leaves at the top and in the middle. At the bottom, the column is wrapped around with a barley sugar ebonised wood. The base of the columns has a carved satinwood bezel, a circular fluted column and finishes with various ring turnings in satinwood and ebony.

The wardrobe has a shaped cornice with a raised arched centre over ogee cushion mouldings. The curved side doors enclose hanging space and have a hinged cupboard at the bottom. The interiors are polished mahogany. The centre of the wardrobe has two arched doors on the top, which open to reveal a section of five mahogany front trays. Again, the inside is polished and the back is panelled. Beneath this are three long graduating drawers, the solid ebony knob handles with a carved satinwood flower in the centre. Inside the top drawer, which is sycamore lined, is the makers label. All standing on an enclosed plinth. The wardrobe is exhibition quality, excellent colour and condition. There is also a matching dressing table available included in the price.
