Item Description
A matched pair of English tub armchairs, by and attributed to Charles Hindley and Sons, London, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, probably c.1860–1880.
Rounded backs flow into outward-scrolling arms above gently shaped seat fronts. Substantial turned front legs and swept rear legs are fitted with castors.
The gold-covered chair bears the stamp ‘C. Hindley and Son, 134 Oxford St, London’ and number 61081. Its companion bears number 47704 and closely corresponds in its shape, leg turnings and frame design.
One chair retains its gold velvet covering; the other is partially stripped, revealing the underlying upholstery and framework. Offered as a matched pair for reupholstery. - the gold ones seat has been traditionally repaired already.
