Item Description
The most alluring English oil on canvas portrait of a young lady, one would imagine of considerable status. Assuming she sat for the portrait whilst in her mid / late twenties it is most likely to have been painted in the early 19th century. She could even be younger and in her late teens, possibly dressed ready to make her formal debut into society as a young debutante. She has the most beautiful complexion with blue eyes, brown hair with ringlets, a style so typical for the period. She is dressed in an off white gown with a pale blue sash as she clasps her book. Set in the original untouched gilt wood frame. Superb condition to the canvas with no tears or faults. The frame has naturally worn and faded over the past two centuries only enhancing the charm and history of this evocative painting. The original plaque to the base of the frame reads Ann Philips 1798 - 1858.
