Large A Younger French Walnut chest of drawers.

John Herbert designed some lovely ranges for the quality maker A Younger, and this floating range from circa 1960 is one of our favourites. We spend time on research and finding original catalogues and have a large collection but Younger brochures are really hard to find. Many were just made for a year or two and all were expensive at the time so sold in fairly small numbers at a time when they were one of the premium makers. This like many of their pieces has a label hidden at the rear of the back of a drawer as most top retailers didn’t like to sell branded items.

French walnut doesn’t actually exist as a wood as all European walnuts are the same, but A Younger used the term to differentiate their pieces from those made using more showy veneers often with heavy varnished finishes. Younger used a much more subtle cut which has a satin type finish with a natural glow and an oiled finish.

Condition

Cleaned and oiled. There are no obvious marks or scratches, but as with all vintage pieces you do have to expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
