Item Description
A pair of large original zoological watercolour drawings, not your typical hand-colored engravings, German circa. 1840.
The snake we can decipher are the "Ringed caecilian" (a foot-long or more, understudied amphibian that lives underground like a worm), some sort of legless lizard for the second,.all very strange, and seems likely there has been some reclassifying and better understanding of them since this was done, which makes the rendering feel all the more of another world.
The second shows a Narwahl at the top, then porpoise, Steller's sea cow (extinct) and West Indian Manatee. Again all hand penned and coloured.
Both housed in matching 19th century gilt, gesso and glazed frames, laid on a green backing. The frames have a lovely faded original quality with wear, loses and signs of elderly woodworm (long vacated)
