Item Description

Signed and titled in pencil in verso.
Impasto on board.
Max Width - 46cm/18”
Max Height - 41cm/16”
Good, untouched condition.
Currently unframed.
Provenance : From the studio of Denise Wren, Henry Wren, Rosemary Wren and Peter Crotty, Oxshott Pottery.

A quietly abstract composition built from heavily worked layers of white, cream and chalky grey. Wren uses thick impasto to create an almost sculptural surface, with scratched lines, ridges and areas of exposed ground giving the painting its structure.

There is a suggestion of landscape or architecture within it, but nothing is fixed. The interest is in the material itself: paint built up, scraped back and worked across the board.

A particularly strong example of Wren’s work away from the ceramics for which she is best known.
