Item Description

A pair of brass and iron andirons with 'S' shaped legs standing on forked feet, the uprights multiknopped and the finials facetted.
American, New York, circa 1830. Many features of these andirons suggest an attribution to Edward Smylie, New York brass founder at the corner of Pike and Henry Streets from 1817.
For text and examples held at The Winterthur Collection see 'Metalwork in Early America Copper and Its Alloys From The Winterthur Collection' by Donald F. Fennimore, published 1996.
