Item Description
A pair of French two-branch wall sconces in the Gothic / Medieval Revival taste, worked in wrought metal with a dark patinated finish. Each sconce carries a pair of scrolling candle branches with tall tapering candle sleeves, set with star motifs, above a pointed pendant body. The Gothic Revival strain within 1940s French wrought metalwork produced some of the most sculptural lighting of the period, and these carry the idiom well — spare, linear and architectural rather than ornate. Recently rewired; the patina appears original, with possible retouching in places. Sold as a pair. France, 1940s. Each: 53 cm high × 33 cm wide × 16 cm deep.
