Item Description
French 19th Century green glazed pottery gargoulette or cruche .
Hand-thrown in terracotta and finished with a rich emerald green lead glaze across the upper body. Provence, Circa 1880. Traditionally used for carrying water from village fountains, the vessel displays the classic Provençal form with an elegant arched carry handle above the mouth, a projecting pouring spout and a secondary side handle. The upper body retains its vibrant glaze with natural kiln runs and subtle tonal variation, while the lower section remains unglazed in warm terracotta — a practical and characteristic finish seen in rural southern French pottery. The body bears an impressed workshop stamp 'J.C.', indicating the potter or small regional workshop that produced the piece.
The generous proportions and pleasing patina give the cruche strong decorative presence, making it particularly suited to country house kitchens, open shelving or rustic interior settings. Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use, including minor rim chips, glaze wear and kiln marks that contribute to its authentic patina.
Provence, France.
