Item Description
Magnificent and important carved and gilded 'Torchere' candleholder which came from a church in Tuscany in Northern Italy. The nearly 6ft high wooden Candlestick with its tripod base is impressively carved in the 'Baroque' style of the period with angel's heads, bunches of grapes, swags and other motifs of the Baroque Era. The tripod base has three extra metal spike candleholders above each of the three feet. The 'Baroque' was a highly ornate style of architecture and woodcarving that began in Western Europe in the beginning of the 17th century and last for well over 100 years, eventually being replaced with the Rococo style.
This 'Giant' candlestick is totally in its original condition and was made in Tuscany, northern Italy between 1650 and 1700. It stands at 71 inches tall x 25 inches diameter at the base. The condition is good with imperfections from its age and usage. The wood very solid and free from rot or worm. The Torchere dismantles into 3 separate pieces, the small 'vase' top. The central vertical 'standard' and the heavy wooden base which makes it convenient to pack and ship.
