Item Description
DESCRIPTION
A handsome late 19th/ early 20th century mahogany bow front wardrobe, made in the George III style in the manner of Gillows and of particularly good proportions. The moulded and dentil cornice sits above a pair of panelled doors, each centred by a large oval panel of well-figured mahogany and outlined with restrained ebony stringing. The doors are fitted with stamped James Collins of Birmingham arrow hinges. Internally, the wardrobe provides a generous full-width hanging space, fitted with a brass hanging rail. Two deep drawers to the base provide additional storage. The mahogany has an attractive rich colour and well-figured veneers, particularly to the oval door panels. The gently bowed front, restrained decoration and architectural proportions make this a particularly pleasing example of the late nineteenth-century revival of Georgian furniture design.
DIMENSIONS
Height: 205 cm
Width: 140 cm
Depth: 57 cm
The wardrobe separates into two (upper and lower) for transport. Buyers are therefore advised to check access, particularly staircases, turns and doorways, before purchasing.
CONDITION
Presented in good antique condition and structurally sound. The mahogany retains an attractive deep colour and mellow patina, with marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. The doors open and close well and retain their James Collins of Birmingham arrow hinges. There is a working key. The hanging rail has been raised at some point and the old fixing holes are evident. Both lower drawers run smoothly.
Overall, a well-presented and highly practical wardrobe with particularly attractive figured mahogany to the doors.
As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report.
