Large Regency Style Mahogany Cheval Dressing Mirror

An impressive and unusually large mahogany cheval dressing mirror in the Regency style, dating from the 20th century and standing an imposing 225 cm high. The substantial rectangular bevelled mirror plate is enclosed within a moulded mahogany frame and supported between a pair of finely turned and fluted uprights. Brass fittings to either side allow the mirror to be tilted and adjusted to the desired angle. The upper section is particularly decorative, with a substantial moulded cornice above a carved frieze incorporating foliate decoration. Above this sits a spindle gallery flanked by square plinths and surmounted by turned finials, giving the mirror a strong architectural presence. The uprights incorporate further turned and carved detail before terminating in the substantial base, which is united by a moulded stretcher with bold carved decoration. The whole stands on particularly attractive scrolling supports, extensively carved with acanthus and foliate ornament.

At approximately 7 ft 4 in tall, this is a considerably larger and more decorative example than the typical cheval dressing mirror. Its generous scale makes it particularly well suited to a large bedroom, dressing room, hallway or other interior where a substantial full-length mirror is required. A handsome and highly decorative piece of furniture, with good rich mahogany colour and considerable presence.

CONDITION
Presented in excellent vintage condition overall, with only light marks, knocks and signs of age and use. The mahogany retains a rich, even colour and good depth of finish. The large bevelled mirror plate is clean and bright, and the brass adjustment fittings operate as they should, allowing the mirror to tilt within the frame. The architectural crest, including the spindle gallery and turned finials, is present and completes the original decorative composition of the mirror. The mirror is structurally sound and presents very well.
